If you search the internet, there are plenty of woodworking experts who are willing to contribute their methods and ideas in constructing home furniture. For your info, there is a website which lets you pick from top wood crafters who have designed quality and easy to read plans that will make your work smooth.

Maybe you have been looking for a particular set of shaker coffee table plans which will survive the torture of 3 kids and maybe a dog, but you have not been able to locate plans which address bracing sufficiently. This website is just for you. The plans in this website are laid out very well, all the details are shown very clearly and you won’t have to guess anymore to build your furniture.

Another popular home furniture is file cabinets. You can buy those sold in any department store, but they are flimsy and maybe don’t quite match your décor. Constructing your own classy strong wood file cabinet is a great idea to organize your files at home. This website has all the details about constructing file cabinets.

Making sustainable home furniture can make you relax and also can become a moneymaking project, but if you use the wrong furniture woodworking plans, the finished furniture may look great but it may not survive a durability test. You need to build it right in the first place and you shall not waste your hard work with amateur wood crafters who give poor advice.

Purchasing furniture woodworking plans on the Internet shall help you in constructing your home furniture. You should also listen to experts and use methods which have been tried before to ensure that your labor and time is worth the while.

Ironwood Spokeshave in Progress

Sometimes I need a diversion. Now and then I just cant get motivated to do the work Im supposed to be doing and instead Ill take on something small to get over the hump. Such was the case about a week ago while staring at a recently completed and delivered piece that was back in the shop for "alterations". I just couldnt get to it. I had been meaning to rebuild my bench top for about two years. I had a slap of maple (a recycled bench top itself) sitting in the shop as well as a second vise. I decided that after years of procrastination it was absolutely essential that I fix up my bench immediately! I spent the better part of a day getting the new top together. I added a wide apron and mortised the vises in behind for more practical holding. It still needs some tweaking but its a huge improvement over the old top. Once that was done it was time to get back to work... but wait, theres that chunk of Arizona Desert Ironwood a friend gave me a few years back. And theres that spokeshave kit my wife gave me a few Christmases ago. Yup, I really need a new spokeshave. Im only part way through the process of making the new tool but the wood is really something else. Beautiful figure and colour and a truly unique, almost smoky, smell. Here are a few progress shots of the shave-to-be with some other handmade tools. The first is of the wood after re-sawing and flattening. the plane in this shot is my Beech bodied jack plane. I restored this antique and added a white oak sole and a walnut handle. The second picture is the wood looking a bit smoother and is shown with my James Krenov smoothing plane. Next is a shot that shows the beautiful colour of the ironwood and finally theres a shot of the blank complete with a rather long crack that Ive reinforced with epoxy. Now, back to work!

Shed Design Plan Building a Firewood Shed

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Don_Koenig]Don Koenig
Sheds come in all sizes and shapes and are built for many varied purposes. An often overlooked shed design plan is for building a firewood shed. I want to address that oversight right now.
Firewood, no matter whether you cut it yourself or buy it from a supplier, is a costly investment either in terms of labor or cold hard cash. It is important to keep your firewood dry and ready to go because if your wood gets wet it doesnt burn efficiently and youll get a great deal of smoke and steam produced as the fire burns. If you live in a climate where there is a lot of rain and snow then building a firewood shed may just be the answer to the problem of keeping your firewood dry and ready for use no matter what the conditions might be.
As with any shed design, the location of your shed is of paramount importance and should not be taken lightly. You want to put the shed in an area where the ground drains well, is preferably higher than low points on your property and is likely to have more natural protection from rain and snowfall than other points in your yard. It should also be built close to the house so that in times of heavy rain or snow or when the temperature is blisteringly cold, you dont have so far to walk to collect firewood for burning. I like to build a firewood shed using one outside wall of the house as the back wall of my shed.
A simple roof, on that has a rather steep slant to it will assure that rain and snow easily slides off the roof and is directed away from the dry firewood being stored inside.
I also like to build the shed with an open front in order to make access to the wood easy for both initial storage and for retrieval when needed.
Thats why most firewood sheds are built with only three sides. In addition to the access issue, the open front allows for air circulation which contributes to keeping the firewood completely dry. It is important to keep the open front facing away from the prevailing direction of the wind in your area. In the Northern Hemisphere that means that the front of the shed should face south.
In order to further protect your firewood from moisture, the floor of the shed should slant slightly toward the open front and you should line the floor with a strong plastic sheeting material.
Of course, most firewood sheds are actually quite small. As you stack wood in the shed, if you only stack a single row of cut firewood, your shed needs to be no more than 3 to 4 feet wide. This width will provide adequate protection from rain and snow. They dont have to be too tall either. If you are storing a cord of wood, then about 4 feet high and 6 feet long will be sufficient.
It should go without saying but, as with any construction project, obtaining the best shed design plan is crucial to the success of your project. Having the right plans will assure that your project proceeds without a hitch.

Sapo game bird feeders and upcycling galore

After I posted a couple of large game projects on Monday, Peter Davie  sent over this Sapo game that he built. This game is popular in South America and involves tossing metal coins into the holes in the top of the game, with the highest score going to a coin that passes through the mouth of the Sapo (Frog). He built it based on photographs. If you would like to see he design and make your own, Peter has kindly supplied this  SketchUp plan.

Bird feeders!

Bill Wilson has been quite busy making artistic variations on my porch swing bird feeder. (If you havent made one, check out the plans. Super easy project.) Love these designs.

Upcycling

I just love this idea from Shannon Bickel for pallet wood deck seating:

*****
Duane in Savannah checks in with another garden potting bench, complete with dry sink. This has proven to be one of my most popular projects this year. You can put one together with any kind of wood you might happen to have. The rustic-ier the better!

*****
No wood is ever scrap! Raymond Levesque used old wood from an old deck to build this BBQ shed. Great idea, looks cool.

*****
And Daniel Quiroz used pallet boards and spray paint to create this flag for the wall.

*****
Heres a clever picture frame idea from Heath Fitts, made with pallet wood.

*****
And just in case you were thinking all pallet wood projects were rustic, check out this beautiful stein Michael Borg made out of oak pallet wood with purpleheart accents.

Finally, vindication for anyone who thought my purple bench was odd. Jack in Moab discovered this one in the wild, near his home. Obviously someone with impeccable color sensibilities!

Make a jigsaw puzzle Christmas card

Last week I posted a jigsaw puzzle that Stephen Dickinson made. I think its a really great project and an easy one to make for Christmas.

Stephen sent over a complete how-to of the process. Thanks man! This looks like a fun project that anyone would love to receive.

*****

I cut out some 1/8” Baltic birch plywood that will leave at least a quarter inch border around the card.  It is best to cut them a little large because you will need to even up the edges as one of the last steps.  Give them a good sanding with some fine paper and a coat or two of lacquer but no spray on the sides that will be glued together.

I cut the card in half, apply glue to the back of the front of the card and apply it to the plywood I have chosen for the puzzle.

After the glue dries I put a tiny entrance hole for the scroll saw blade.   I use puzzle blades I buy from Mike at http://www.mikesworkshop.com/.  There are other suppliers but that is the one I use.

I cut out the puzzle area with a couple of tabs to lock it to the frame.  These tabs also give the person putting the puzzle some Idea of the orientation of the puzzle to the frame.

Making sure the frame is right side up, I glue it to the backer.  In this case I use another piece of 1/8” bb plywood.  I have used thin masonite before and that works well too.   Trial and lots of error has taught me to make sure there is plenty of wood under the frame and to have the frame right side up.  It isn’t fun when you discover the glued up puzzle back is only going to end up with 1/16” border on one corner.

Cut the puzzle and try to have a lock at each side that faces another piece.  In this case I didn’t do that.  I wanted the balls to be loose in these cards.  It’s your puzzle, cut it the way you want.  There are no lines to follow unless you want to.  It may not come out the way you had had it planned but the recipient won’t know that.  They will probably be pleased with a cool Christmas card.

After the frame part has the glue cured I use my 1” belt sander to even up the edges.  Don’t go too fast grinding off the wood.  It will come of real fast and you may find the border is getting real thin.  I’m not a perfectionist but I don’t like making mistakes.  I have to keep reminding myself that these can look home made.  They are.

Next I give the frame a couple coats of spray on lacquer front back and sides.

The backs of the pieces may have a little fuzz from the scroll saw so give them a little rubbing on some sand paper.  I glued a piece of 120 to some masonite and rub the back of the pieces across that in a circular pattern.

You need to assemble the puzzle in the frame to make sure you haven’t misplaced any of the pieces.

Crazy clock

I love it when people let their imaginations run free and come up with cool projects. Tim Mautz designed and built this insane clock freehand, without any sort of template overlay. Its unfinished and raw. I think it sort of looks like Medusa meets Mayan.

Tim e wood-burned the picture. Ive never done any wood burning, but it definitely goes on my to-try list. Thanks Tim!

Woodworking and music

Woodworking is such a visual medium, its fun to build projects that involve sound. Of course, there is a long, rich history of making musical instruments out of wood. Its a natural fit. You might recall 13-year-old Max Truell whose woodworking I showcased back in June.

Well hes back, this time with music-related projects. My favorite is this electric violin. (Yes, it works!) So cool. Love the carving. Bent laminated rimu and purple heart. I love it when people experiment, try new techniques and learn new skills.

Other recent projects include a phone case and guitar pick holder. Fantastic work Max.
